Lawn care in Seagrove Beach

Named for its grove, and the grove is still the problem. Seagrove has the oldest tree canopy on 30A and the hardest shade on the corridor.

What Seagrove Beach actually is

Seagrove was established in the late 1940s by C.H. McGee, originally 170 acres with deeded beach access, concrete block cottages and sand roads. Some of those original cottages are still standing next to houses four times their size.

What survived best is the trees. Walton County's own tourism material describes a preserved thick grove of windswept trees, and the streets here are lined with oaks in a way no other 30A neighbourhood matches.

Two rare coastal dune lakes sit inside or beside it. Eastern Lake, around 62 acres, is the most developed of the county's dune lakes with private homes and condos along its shore. Deer Lake sits in Deer Lake State Park and is habitat for the endangered Choctawhatchee beach mouse.

The park next door is worth knowing about because it tells you what naturally grows in this soil: southern magnolias, scrub oaks, golden asters, woody goldenrod, and rare species including Gulf coast lupine, pitcher plants and one of Florida's largest populations of Curtiss' sandgrass.

What that means for the grass

Mature live oaks do two things to a lawn at once. They take the light, and their roots take the water and nutrients out of the top few inches of sand where turf roots live. A lot of thin Seagrove lawns are not sick, they are outcompeted.

That makes cultivar choice the whole game. UF/IFAS rates Floratam St. Augustine only fair in shade and notes it fails below about six hours of sun, while Palmetto and Classic hold up much better. Fine-textured matrella zoysias are described as extremely shade tolerant. Bahiagrass and bermudagrass are both poor choices under canopy.

Feeding a shaded lawn harder is the common mistake. A grass in low light cannot use the nitrogen and puts out weak growth that invites disease. Raising the cut and easing the nitrogen rate is the correct move.

In North Florida the fertilizing window runs from around the middle of April to the middle or end of September. UF/IFAS also notes that the potential for nitrate leaching in northwest Florida is greatest from January through March, which is a real consideration on a street where the water table is close and a dune lake is two blocks away.

Questions about Seagrove Beach

Nothing grows under my oaks. What can actually be done?

Three honest options: change the grass to a shade-tolerant cultivar, raise the mowing height and cut the nitrogen back so the grass you have can feed itself, or accept that the deepest shade wants a mulched bed rather than turf. A free on-site walkthrough is where that gets decided.

Do you handle the leaf and pine needle clean-up?

Blowing of drives, walks and patios is part of standard maintenance, and pine straw installation is on the service list.

Are the dune lakes a reason to go organic?

Eastern Lake and Deer Lake are both here, and coastal dune lakes drain to the Gulf through the beach. Green Gate uses organic fertilization and organic weed control on every property as a matter of course.
