Lawn care in Inlet Beach

The eastern end of 30A, where the county line runs through the neighbourhood and the land was handed out to veterans by lottery after the war.

What Inlet Beach actually is

Inlet Beach is the easternmost of the South Walton beaches, named for Phillips Inlet, and it sits across both Walton and Bay Counties. After the Second World War land here was distributed to veterans by lottery, which is where the old nicknames Soldiers Beach and Veterans Beach come from.

The mail is genuinely confusing and it matters. In 2016 the Postal Service moved 32413 customers in this area to 32461, and while Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, Seacrest, Watersound and Panama City Beach all remain acceptable mailing names on that ZIP, Inlet Beach must be used as the official city name for emergency purposes. 32461 is Walton County, 32413 is Bay County.

Lake Powell sits at the eastern edge. At roughly 800 acres it is the largest coastal dune lake in Florida, it straddles the Walton and Bay county line, and Camp Helen State Park runs along its Gulf side.

The building stock is mixed in a way the planned towns west of here are not: rustic beach cottages on the side streets sitting next to modern multi-storey homes, condominiums, townhomes and villas, around the largest regional beach access on the corridor.

What that means for the grass

Mixed housing means mixed lots. An original cottage parcel and a new four-storey build next door will have completely different sun exposure, drainage and irrigation, so a single prescription for the street does not exist.

Salt exposure is high on this end. UF/IFAS rates bahiagrass very poor and centipedegrass poor for salt tolerance, which rules both out on the more exposed parcels. St. Augustine, zoysia and bermuda are all rated good, and seashore paspalum is rated excellent.

Lake Powell being the largest coastal dune lake in the state, and one that opens to the Gulf through the beach, makes the choice of what goes on a lawn here a real one rather than a preference.

Watering is the same discipline as everywhere in this sand: half an inch to three quarters of an inch per application, only when the lawn shows it needs it. Blades folding lengthwise, a blue-grey cast, or footprints staying visible are the three signs UF/IFAS names.

Questions about Inlet Beach

Is my address Walton County or Bay County?

It depends on the parcel, and Inlet Beach genuinely straddles the line. 32461 is Walton County and 32413 is Bay County, but several mailing names are accepted on both. Green Gate covers the 30A corridor and south Walton County, so the simplest answer is to call with the address. (850) 238-5365.

You mention veterans. Is that relevant?

Bryan Samson spent ten years in the United States Coast Guard before starting the company, and Inlet Beach was largely settled by veterans who received land by lottery after the war. Green Gate identifies as veteran owned on its Google Business Profile.

Do you take short-term rental properties?

Weekly and bi-weekly maintenance on a set schedule is the standard offering, which is what most rental and second-home owners on this end of 30A need. Free on-site estimate.
